Resistance report for events of wednesday 2 january 2008 :

Battle erupts between rival US allies : shi'i puppet police battle sunni collaborators near Abu Hanifah mosque in western Bagdad wednesday evening
In a dispatch posted at 11:20pm Baghdad time Wednesday night, the Yaqen News Agency reported that fighting erupted near the Abu Hanifah Mosque in Baghdad’s al-A‘zamiyah district when a troop of puppet policemen attempted to storm the home of a member of the Sunni collaborationist “al-A‘zamiyah Awakening” police.
Yaqen reported that the puppet police, armed with machine guns, opened intensive fire at the mosque when they came under fire after trying to storm the home of the member of the “Awakening” collaborator forces.  Fighting was still under way as of the time of reporting.
In recent weeks the US has stepped up its effort to rely increasingly on Sunni collaborationist “Awakening” police rather than on the Shi‘i sectarian militias that make up the bulk of the existing puppet police forces throughout much of Iraq and are close to various factions within the regime in Iran.  Washington is apparently attempting to reduce the extent and effectiveness of Iranian influence inside Iraq but the reorientation has met with heavy resistance on the part of the US-installed Iraqi “Prime Minister” Nuri al-Maliki and other members of his administration, who have tried to block American efforts to incorporate the Sunni collaborators into the puppet police and military forces.

Yaqen reported the Director of the puppet “Special Information Bureau” of the intelligence apparatus as issuing a statement in which it said that the memorial service was for the elder brother of two agents working for the intelligence department.  The blast killed those two agents and also leading members of the intelligence service who were attending the memorial meeting along with their families and children.

In a dispatch posted at 7:15pm Baghdad time Wednesday night, the Yaqen News Agency reported that a bomb exploded by a US patrol in the northern Baghdad area of al-Husayniyah on Wednesday afternoon.
Yaqen reported a source in the puppet police as saying that the bomb went off as an American patrol was passing through the area and that it damaged one US Humvee.  No information on the nature or extent of US losses was available, however, because the American troops cordoned off the area and allowed no one near.  As of the time of reporting, the Americans had issued no announcement regarding the attack.

In a dispatch posted at 5:30pm Baghdad time Wednesday evening, the Yaqen News Agency reported that armed militiamen belonging to one of the parties currently taking part in the puppet government attacked a checkpoint at the as-Salam puppet police station near Balad, 80km north of Baghdad.
Yaqen reported a source in the Balad puppet police command as saying that one policeman was killed and nine more wounded in the attack, one of those a lieutenant colonel.  Reinforcements were dispatched to the puppet police checkpoint and a gun battle ensuied in which 15 of the attacking militiamen were killed and at least 10 more of them were captured  Three police patrol vehicles were burned in the engagement.
Recently confrontations have increased between Shi‘i sectarian militias and US and US-backed forces in Iraq, as Washington increasingly seeks to base its occupation on Sunni collaborators rather than on the Shi‘i sectarian parties that initially helped the US invade and occupy the country.  The Shi‘i sectarian parties, including those to which the current US-installed puppet “Prime Minister” belongs, are close to various political factions in Iran and the United States is apparently seeking to reduce Iranian influence and presence in Iraq.

In a dispatch posted at 10:55am Baghdad time Wednesday morning, the Yaqen News Agency reported that a bomb exploded by the vehicle in which Lieutenant Colonel Subhi ‘Abd al-Karim, the Commander of the puppet “emergency forces” for the Tuz Khurmatu area was riding while on his way to Kirkuk.

Yaqen reported a source in the puppet regime’s security forces as saying that the bomb, which was planted by the side of the road near the village of ar-Rukubah, destroyed a US armored vehicle.  The source offered no other details on the nature or extent of American losses because the US troops quickly closed off the area immediately after the blast to prevent any information about American losses from leaking out.

In recent months the Jaysh al-Mahdi has been the target of US and puppet regime forces, in particular in the cities of southern Iraq where the Americans and their Iraqi puppet regime allies have killed or captured a large number of the militia’s commanders and cadres.  The Jaysh al-Mahdi has also come into conflict with other, rival Shi‘i sectarian militias as they vie for control of the southern part of the country.

Shi‘i fundamentalist cleric Muqtada as-Sadr formed the Jaysh al-Mahdi militia in July 2003, shortly after the US invasion of Iraq, in which the Americans relied on the support of the Badr Brigades, a 30,000-man Shi‘i sectarian militia loyal to the ‘Abd al-‘Aziz al-Hakim and the Supreme Council of the Islamic Revolution in Iraq (SCIRI).  The SCIRI was founded by pro-Iranian Shi‘i fundamentalist clerics in Iran in 1982 and is regarded as being close to the liberal members of the political establishment in Iran, Muhammad Khatimi who war Iran’s Prime Minister at the time of the American invasion of Iraq.

Sectarian murder spree continues : three more bodies found shot to death in various parts of Bagdad tuesday

Yaqen reported a source in the puppet police as saying that two bodies were found on the ar-Rusafah side of eastern Baghdad and one in al-Karakh in the west.  All the victims had been bound, blindfolded and shot.
The Shi‘i sectarian militias are pressing ahead with sectarian abductions, torture, and murder of Sunnis in an effort to “cleanse” Baghdad and vast swaths of Iraqi territory to the south and east of Sunnis.   The bloody sectarian campaign is aimed at implementation of plans to partition Iraq drawn up by Zionist and American think tanks.
The idea of “the dissolution of Iraq into a Shi‘ite state, a Sunni state and the separation of the Kurdish part” was voiced by veteran Zionist military correspondent Ze’ev Schiff in Ha'aretz on2 June 1982 and was a part of the divide-and-rule strategy laid out by Zionist writer Oded Yinon in his “Strategy for Israel in the 1980s,” published in Kivunim (Directions), A Journal for Judaism and Zionism, published by the World Zionist Organization in occupied Jerusalem in February 1982.  (It was translated by the late anti-Zionist writer and activist Israel Shahak and is widely available.)
The idea of splitting the Shi‘ah in Iraq from the rest of the country was a cornerstone of the neo-Conservative strategy laid out in “A Clean Break” a paper drawn up by American Zionist government officials Richard Perle, Douglas Feith, David Wurmser, and Paul Wolfowitz in 1996 for the then Zionist Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.  Then in 2000 the neo-Conservative Project for a New American Century wrote Rebuilding America’s Defenses on the basis of the “Clean Break.”
The American version of the strategy for a partition of Iraq appeared in the article “The Three-State Solution” published in The New York Times on 25 November 2003 by Leslie Gelb (President Emeritus of the US Council on Foreign Relations).  The same idea was reiterated, this time with “bi-partisan support” in the article by Gelb and US Democratic Senator Joseph Biden in “Unity through Autonomy in Iraq,” in The New York Times on 1 May 2006.
Then on 8 October 2006 the London Sunday Times reported that the partition of Iraq along religious and ethnic lines was one of the suggestions that the Baker-Hamilton commission was advancing.

Yaqen reported a source in the puppet “Iraqi Transport Ministry” as saying that the Iranian delegation, headed by a deputy minister, will visit Iraq soon to discuss developing transport.  The comprehensive transportation plan is also to cover the transport of passengers, busses, and trucks in addition to the participation of Iranian companies in other development projects.
The source said that regular airline service between Tehran and Baghdad would resume after years of suspension because of the Iran-Iraq war that began in 1980.  Such flights have already begun on a periodical basis.

Later, in a dispatch posted at 4:17pm Yaqen reported that the puppet police commander for Diyala Province had announced that his forces had arrested the commander of the collaborationist “popular awakening committees” in Buhriz along with three of his aids on charges that they were tied to “armed groups.”
Yaqen reported Staff Major General Ghanim al-Qurayshi as saying that the puppet police arrested Samer al-‘Ukkash, the “popular committee” chief, along with three of his aides, claiming that they had been supporters of al-Qa‘idah.
The collaborationist “popular awakening committees” were formed by the US in an effort to draw tribal elements to its side by claiming that their targets were only al-Qa‘idah and not the Iraqi Resistance.  Accordingly, “Awakening” committees at times consist of individuals that had been taking part in Iraqi Resistance activities.  In practice, however, the US then uses the “Awakening” councils against all Resistance activity, not only al-Qa‘idah.
